  • 2005: JJ Irani Committee recommended unified tribunal for company law matters.
  • Companies (Second Amendment) Act 2002 first proposed NCLT, struck down by Madras HC.
  • 11 May 2010: SC 5-judge bench in Madras Bar Association v UoI upheld tribunalisation but mandated several safeguards (composition, judicial dominance, independence).
  • Companies Act 2013 Chapter XXVII (Sections 407-434) provided for NCLT + NCLAT.
  • 14 May 2015: SC in MBA v UoI affirmed Companies Act 2013 provisions valid.
