- Companies (Second Amendment) Act 2002 first proposed NCLT, struck down by Madras HC.
- 11 May 2010: SC 5-judge bench in Madras Bar Association v UoI upheld tribunalisation but mandated several safeguards (composition, judicial dominance, independence).
- Companies Act 2013 Chapter XXVII (Sections 407-434) provided for NCLT + NCLAT.
- 14 May 2015: SC in MBA v UoI affirmed Companies Act 2013 provisions valid.
- 1 June 2016: NCLT + NCLAT constituted by Government Notification.
- 2016: IBC 2016 designated NCLT as Adjudicating Authority for corporate persons.
