  • 1850: Triton Insurance Company — India’s first general insurance company.

Composition + Functions

Functions (Section 14):

  1. Register and renew insurance companies.
  2. Protect policyholders’ interests.
  3. Promote insurance penetration + literacy.
  4. Regulate intermediaries (agents, brokers, surveyors, TPAs).
  5. Specify code of conduct for surveyors + adjustors.
